5G Private Network Provider – Traditional Solution Provider

Cellnex Telecom is a Spanish-based telecom infrastructure service provider, known for its large acquisitions of tower assets in the European market in recent years. In addition to the tower business, the tower company, which has nearly 130,000 stations in Europe, has quietly entered the 5G private network market and started to compete with traditional mobile operators for the 5G to B pie.

In November 2021, Cellnex Telecom won the 5G private network contract in Basingstoke Central Business District. There are said to be more than 100 companies in the business district, which looks like a big 5G private network contract. It’s no accident that Cellnex won the big deal. Back in 2020, Cellnex took its first step into 5G private networks by acquiring Edzcom, a company focused on wireless private networks for enterprise customers. As a well-known wireless private network solution provider in Northern Europe, Edzcom has deployed more than 35 wireless private networks in Europe, covering ports, airports, mines, manufacturing plants, refineries and other fields.

Private networks are not special products of 5G. As early as in the 2/3/4G era, various private networks were deployed in the fields of public security, airports, electricity and petroleum. These private networks will be upgraded in the 5G era. From the cases of Cellnex and Edzcom, it is not difficult to see that the future 5G private network market still has a place for those who have been focused on providing private network solutions. In the 5G era of cloud network integration, ICT and OT integration, these traditional private network providers may launch a new cooperation mode with cloud providers and operators.

The 5G private network is a complex end-to-end system that integrates CT, IT and OT. In the process of convergence, there is a huge expertise and technology gap between the ICT industry and the vertical industry. To fill this gap, operators, equipment suppliers, system integrators, cloud providers, information technology service providers, vertical industries and other parties need to work together to complete. But because of this, the parties also see new market opportunities. Thus, players have been sharpening their knives to this market.

With the allocation of 5G private network spectrum in some overseas markets, the threshold of 5G private network has been completely cut off, further intensifying market competition. Currently, a free-for-all for 5G private networks has taken shape in some overseas markets. This battle can be divided into two parts: one is the competition between traditional device vendors, OpenRAN vendors and cloud vendors to provide devices, products and solutions; The first road is the competition among mobile operators, cloud providers, cable TV operators, fixed network operators, equipment suppliers and industrial giants in the integration, construction, operation, maintenance and operation of 5G private network.

But no matter how messy the fight, the underlying logic is to allocate private network spectrum so that companies do not have to rely on public network operators to build their own 5G private networks, and it will undoubtedly hurt traditional mobile operators the most. The cake that was originally thought to be exclusive to traditional mobile operators will gradually be divided up by new small and micro 5G private network operators from various industries and fields. Just as relevant officials in South Korea said after the allocation of 5G private network spectrum, with the allocation of 5G private network spectrum, more and more enterprises will build their own 5G private network, which is expected to form a pattern of coexistence of operators of various forms and sizes, and jointly promote the digitalized innovation ecology of the whole industry.
