What is a 5G private network?

There are multiple deployment modes for 5G private networks:
1. The enterprise independently builds itself based on the frequency band of the private network and is completely isolated from the public network.
Enterprises usually need to apply for a specific frequency and independently build a complete set of independent 5G core network, 5G base station and other network networking modes. It has high controllability and low latency while safe data transmission. However, the deployment cost is high and special People come to carry out follow-up maintenance, which is basically impossible for ordinary small businesses.
2. Operators help companies build independent private networks based on public network frequency bands, which are completely isolated from public networks.
It is similar to the first one, but this is not to apply for frequency resources, but to rent a specific frequency from the existing public network frequency to build a network completely separated from the 5G public network, including the core network, base station and MEC The complete 5G private network. The cost is still quite high.
3. Share RAN between private network and public network
The gNB of the 5G private network shares the public network, and MEC, UPF, 5GC CP, and UDM are deployed independently. The wireless data traffic is shunted on the gNB, the data traffic of the public network is transmitted to the public network UPF, and the data traffic of the private network is transmitted to the private network UPF.
For example, the camera and the data on the device side in the formula are all in the enterprise, but the public network used by employees, watching TV, and transmitting data are all based on the public network.
Enterprises can save deployment and maintenance costs while ensuring data security.
4. Share RAN and control plane between private network and public network
The control plane functions of the 5G private network and the public network are all performed by the 5GC CP and UDM in the public network.
In this scheme, the gNB and UPF of the private network are connected to the 5GC CP of the 5G public network through the N2 and N4 interfaces respectively. The data in the enterprise is stored and transmitted in the 5G private network, rather than stored in the enterprise. In terms of data security and confidentiality It’s worse. But because MEC and UPF are still deployed inside the enterprise, the delay is guaranteed.
5. Fully share 5G public network resources
All the 5G resources of the public network are used by the private network, a completely end-to-end “virtual private network”.
Advantages of 5G private network
The 5G private network has many advantages such as large bandwidth, wide connection, low latency, and security.
The 5G private network can satisfy all industries and enterprises’ control over the 5G network, high reliability, security, privacy, etc. The public network cannot satisfy this.
The 5G private network has the following 4 advantages:
1. The deployment scope is regionalized and can be used in closed places, such as manufacturing parks, ports, mines, etc.;
2. Personalized network requirements, strict requirements for delay, high reliability, high uplink rate requirements, strict data security and isolation requirements, etc., network slicing, edge computing, NFV/SDN in the 5G private network realize the flexibility of the campus network deploy;
3. Scenario-based industry application means that the 5G network will deploy computing power nearby and provide capability opening for different industry scenarios;
4. It can achieve compatibility and intercommunication with existing IT networks, and network capabilities and network technologies will continue to evolve and upgrade.
The best choice is the public network plus the private network, which is more favorable.
IDC, a market research organization, predicts that by 2023, 60% of China’s top 1000 vertical industries (such as manufacturing, logistics, etc.) companies will use 5G private networks, putting data security in the first place.
